Students communicate effectively.
There are many classes that have helped me develop my listening skills, listening is a requirement for all classes after all and it's all about whether you are actively or passively listening. A class that really helped me learn the difference was Interpersonal Communication. This class helped me know what it really means to communicate and how it must flow both ways in order for it to be effective. One way communication is effective or not is if there is noise obstructing communication. These can be barriers like noise in a restaurant or the method of delivery like through text message. English 1010 helped me realize that personal opinion can also be a reason there's a barrier between communication. If you are talking against someone's beliefs it's likely they will not hear you simply because they do not want to.
Additionally, English 2010 helped me realize sometimes the best way to communicate is through a letter. For that class, I wrote both a thank you letter as well as a letter that was a call to action for a fan base. These classes have helped to bring my attention to being a better and more effective communicator
Students develop quantitative literacies necessary for their chosen field of study.
Introduction to Environmental Science has helped me analyze what a major in this field really looks like. I plan to graduate with a major in environmental studies and this class has helped me realize all the layers to that kind of field. An example is when we went to see how glass is recycled, we reached the Q&A session after they told us about how the factory works and what they do with all the glass "sand". I asked, "what kind of schooling did you do to end up here?" and the one who was leading the group said she had majored in environmental science. This came as both a relief and an intriguing thought to me, to see where that kind of major has the possibilities to take you.
Students think critically and creatively.
Two classes have really helped me think critically about topics, Climate Change and Introduction to Environmental Science. Climate change presented graphs that we had to read accurately and effectively and our final project was about what we could do to make a climate difference even just in our community. Environmental Science helped me make connections with my geography classes as we talked about earthquakes or floods in geography we then learned how humans have changed natural land and that makes some things like flooding more likely to occur.
Students develop the knowledge and skills to be civically engaged.
Introduction to Environmental Science had us do all kinds of different things that helped me learn about all the different layers of our community. The day that I think about the most is when we went to Catholic Community Services and helped food preparations for the homeless. I enjoyed doing that, the best way to understand it is to look at the reflection.
Students develop the knowledge and skills to work with others in a professional and constructive manner.
Two classes that have helped me work with people would be America and Religious Diversity and Social Media Tools. My American Religions class helped me see that their area all kinds of people in the Salt Lake Valley and it's not always as black and white as you think. Social Media Tools was a class that taught me a lot of valuable advice that I will use as I progress in my career life. I have already put some of them to good use while helping my mom move her business forward.
Students develop computer and information literacy.
The classes that have aided me in developing my technology knowledge are my Photoshop class where we learned the basics of Adobe Photoshop as well as where to go if I need additional assistance. The other was Social Media Tools this class helped me learn what the most effective way to have a success full online presents.
Students develop the attitudes and skills for lifelong wellness.
The best classes I took to give myself mental breaks were Laughter Yoga and Zumba. Laughter Yoga was a great stress reliever and just an overall really fun and funny class. Zumba is a great class to get your body moving and out your thoughts to the side, if you're trying to follow along and not mess up you can't give energy to your thoughts. Plus my professors for both classes made them amazing, Delan Jenson and Sue Rockmore respectively.
